Benefits of working as student staff

Tips on working at south bank students' union as a student!

Hi, I'm Liza - currently working as the Office and People Assistant at the Student Union. I’ve been part of the SU since I started at LSBU, and honestly, it’s been one of the best parts of my uni experience. Let me tell you why.

Get Paid, Stay Flexible

Yes, it’s a paid role, which is a big deal for me as a student. Here I got a chance to contribute to my uni experience, while getting paid. Plus, the SU works around my uni schedule, so I didn’t have to juggle fire to excel in my studies. And because it’s right on campus, I save time and travel costs - super convenient.

Build Skills That Actually Matter

Having any experience at all significantly increases your chances of getting a graduate offer compared to having none. Beyond the paycheck, working at the SU has helped me build real-world experience that looks great on a CV. I started as a Student Voice Assistant and moved into my current role, and along the way I’ve learned to:

  • Run training sessions

  • Speak confidently in public

  • Coordinate events

  • Manage Excel datasets

  • Effectively communicate with students

  • About HR processes

  • About office maintenance and procurement processes

  • Lead independent projects, from idea creation to implementation

  • Good work ethics

These are skills I know will help me long after I graduate.
