Sarah Tucker is a PhD student working on a project titled ‘Forecasting Stock Prices Using Convolutional Neural Networks on Matrix-Encoded Financial Time Series Data’. Before this, Sarah completed a master’s in Applied Artificial Intelligence and a bachelor’s degree in Business Management with Finance, both at LSBU. Throughout her academic journey, she has actively engaged with opportunities beyond the classroom. She came second in the MSc category at the BCS Women Lovelace Colloquium in Glasgow where she presented a scientific poster using my dissertation topic and she also won ‘Highly Commended’ in the Innovation category for South Bank Ignite 2025 for a product idea which is a cycle helmet designed for those with curly, coily or kinky hair, a product idea aimed at addressing real-world needs through inclusive design.
Sarah has been a student at LSBU for over four years, which has given her a deep understanding of both the academic environment and the wider student experience. She has taken up various roles during that time within the university, including being a Student Ambassador, Employability Support Officer and Enrolment Customer Service Officer. Each of these roles allowed her to support students directly while gaining insight into how the university operates behind the scenes. She also had the opportunity to lead the Debating Society, working closely with the Students’ Union to grow engagement and support student voices. Sarah has also worked Front of House as a Student Support Assistant and served as an Outreach Assistant. These roles gave her the chance to connect with a wide range of students and contribute to creating an inclusive and welcoming experience at the SU.
Sarah wanted to become a trustee because she believes in the mission and values of the Students’ Union. The SU plays an important role in supporting students throughout their academic journey and Sarah is keen about helping it continue to grow and deliver on that mission.
Being part of the Board of Trustees offers an opportunity to give back more strategically. Sarah hopes to contribute to decision-making that keeps students at the heart of everything the SU does, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds. For Sarah, it’s important to be a voice that ensures inclusivity and equity are always part of the conversation and that all students feel seen, heard and supported during their time at LSBU.
